Child Development Wing

Children of Uttarakhand have the distinction of residing in the highest altitudes of India. Their quality of life is conditioned by the socio-cultural & environmental ethos of Uttarakhand as well as overall status of infrastructural development of the State. The Infant morality Rate in Uttaranchal is 41(SRS, 2004), which seen in sex differential status, stands at 38 for male and at 46 for female. The Under-five mortality rate (NFHS-II, 1998-99) is 56-4. According to census 2001, children upto 6 years in Uttarakhand amount to 13.19 lakh, which is 15.56 percentage of total population of State. As per NFHS-II status, the percentage of children who have received all vaccinations is 40.90; in the age group of 6-35 months, 51.6 percent children suffer with moderate /severe anaemia, 46.5 percent children are chronically undernourished (Stunted), 73 percent children are undernourished (wasted) while 41.4 percent children are underweight. The overall sex ratio of the State is 963 whereas among children upto 6 year, the sex ratio is 886.

To overcome the above shortcomings,ICDS Uttarakhand is committed to the cause of bringing changes in the nutrition & health states of children of the State. Our innovative steps include organizing Good parenting Camps/ Healthy Baby Shows at Anganwadi Centres and specific orientation of ICDS & Health staff on micronutrient malnutrition among children. Researches on Infant Mortality Audit, Low Birth Weight Babies and Neonatal care practices among tribes of Uttarakhand are being carried out. The quality of pre-school education at AWCs is being improved through joining hands with Education Department and setting up of Early Childhood Care & Education centres at AWCs.

Government of Uttarakhand has set-up State Child Development Board, which has been entrusted the task of finalizing the State Plan of Action alongwith other activities.
